How easy is it to get everything you own, including your dog and truck, from point A to point B, 2400 miles away, in less than 1 week? We have done it once, so we can do it again, right? Dan and I are figuring out that we have whole new hurdles to jump with our new assignment in Anchorage. There are 4 ways to get to Alaska. The first way is by train, which will take way to long, so that option is out. The next is by the ferry service. This also will take over a week and they make you keep your dog in the car, so that option is way out. The remaining two are the most promising. The Alaskan highway will take us from Vancouver, BC to Tok, Alaska, just above and to the right of Anchorage. It is an adventure-packed two-lane highway that winds through the mountains taking you to some of the prettiest parts of the British Columbia and the Yukon. This would be a great journey and road trip if we had over a week and we went in the middle of the summer. But, our choice is to make the trip in 5 days and travel when the conditions may be less than desirable. The Alaskan Highway website strongly advises bringing along extra gas cans, extra car parts, and thermal blankets for when you are forced to sleep in your car. Also, there is an art to peeing along the Alaskan Highway because there is the added risk of being attacked by a moose or bear! What have we gotten ourselves into?! So really, the only option left is to store the truck and fly. Uneventful, yes, but won't we have plenty "eventful" once we get to our lovely sub-arctic climate get-away?
